However the well-struck balance between sweet nostalgia and irreverent sarcasm that made Xue Cuns song The Northeasterners are all Living Lei Fengs" such a hit, gives the film a heart. It's a story about a group of unlicensed street steamed dumpling vendors in the 1980s Beijing. A guy named Liu Jianjun is in love with Shen Hong, a restaurant waitress, who is only interested in moving to America. Jianjun's best friend, a traffic cop is killed for protecting Shen Hong. Jianjun gathers his friends to revenge his death and the murderer is then killed by Jianjun's younger brother, whose girlfriend also lost her life during the fight. Shen Hong finally get her visa to America and she agreed to help Jianjun to loose his virginity the night before her flight. All Jianjun needs now is to find a condom...</div><br />

Longing to escape the frustrations of her life she travels to Beijing in search of work, but time and time again is turned away and forced back to her provincial life. This is a complex film that undermines the Western cultural value assigned to notions of art and talent. Set in post-Cultural Revolution China, the film juxtaposes the hopes and dreams of â€œartistsâ€ against a society bound by rigid social codes and the harsh day-to-day reality of a life lived destitute of love and hope. Like the characters from Chekhov's Three Sisters which Cai-Ling compares herself to, the film is infused with a constant longing for the vibrancy of the city and a spring of new beginnings that never comes. Any attempt at action dissipates into bathos and bitter humor and every human relationship seems only to highlight the inadequacies of our ability to communicate. Yet Changwei attaches no romanticism to the role of the solitary artist. â€œThis is your life and you must learn how to bear it,â€ Cai-Ling tells Jiao Gang (Hu Jinquan) a homosexual dance teacher who, like her, is outcast from society, ridiculed for his ambition and deviation from social norms. Changwei creates a sparse aesthetic reminiscent of his earlier works and his fellows from the Beijing Film Academy. Theatrical costumes and makeup bring the only flashes of color to an otherwise grey and toneless world.</span></div><br />

At school, he has three pals: tall, bespectacled Weijun, chubby "Louse" and little "Mouse". They all spy on pretty fellow student Xie Juehong, whom one day faints after being summoned to see the school's headmistress, miss Zhou. One day, Wang Han is made leader of group gymnastics at his school but is told he must first get a new white shirt; reluctantly, his mother uses valuable clothes coupons to buy the material. Then, playing by the river, Wang Han has his new shirt stolen by a man on the run. The fugitive, who uses it to staunch his wounds, turns out to be Juehong's elder brother, Xie Fulai.
