In her second feature, Tawainese director Singing Chen intertwines three compelling stories: the beautiful Ching suffers from post-natal depression and is increasingly estranged from her architect husband; impoverished hawker Biung is struggling to shake his alcoholism in order to attract his tomboy daughter back home; and Yellow Bull wanders the countryside in a neon-lit shrine-on-wheels, tending the statues of the gods and looking out for young street urchin Xian. Rippling through the film with omnipotent narrative agency are the forces of religion - both Buddhism and Christianity, and a startling array of stray dogs and purebreds. While this intriguing film elegantly tackles a range of class and social issues, it is most interested in its colourful human characters and what distinguishes their individual pursuits of redemption.
